Patersons' sole landfill operation is located near Mount Vernon in Glasgow, where the disposal of domestic, commercial and industrial waste is being used to progressively backfill the void created by the quarrying of sand and gravel.
Planning permission for waste disposal was initially granted as far back as 1955 and the tipping of clean excavation and demolition material commenced the following year.
Like all privately owned landfill sites, Patersons of Greenoakhill holds a licence issued by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency. The current version, issued in 2000, lists 161 rules which the site must follow. The regulations cover every aspect of the site's work. A working plan is submitted giving precise details of the way in which work is to be carried out and this plan cannot be altered without the approval of SEPA. The licence also covers site security, laboratory equipment and operating hours.
It gives precise instructions as to quantities and types of wastes to be processed and regulates the chemical content and pH value of each load of waste to enter the site. Monitoring of the site on a monthly, biannual and annual basis is required and there are numerous rules on moving and burying waste.
